Refuge taking student applications for Youth Conservation Corps

By REFUGE / DDWS - | Apr 22, 2021

The J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge is hiring one high school student for its annual Youth Conservation Corps summer program.

It is hiring the student to assist with maintenance and administrative support.

The YCC program targets teens ages 15-18 to provide them with a valuable work-earn-learn experience. The student is required to work a minimum of eight weeks between June and September.

Maintenance duties will include facilities and care of recreation trails, including removal of invasive plants. The work will primarily be completed outdoors, with possible exposure to heat, humidity and insects. The administrative support duties may include, but not be limited to, answering phones, filing paperwork, organizing office supplies and entering data. No prior work experience is required.

The student will have the opportunity to attend educational field trips to local environmental venues.

Hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a 30-minute break for lunch.

The compensation is $9 per hour.

It is strongly recommended that any summer camps and family vacations be scheduled outside the eight-week time frame. Reliable transportation is required; Sanibel toll is paid by the student.

The deadline for applications is May 4 at 4 p.m.

Applications may be acquired from and returned to Erin Myers at erin_myers@fws.gov.

The J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge is at 1 Wildlife Drive, Sanibel.
