The Sanibel Fire and Rescue District responded to a heavy equipment fire on April 20 at about 8 p.m. in the 900 block of Whelk Drive. Firefighters were quickly able to extinguish the flames and no injuries were reported. Officials explained that heavy equipment fires can reach temperatures well over 1,000 degrees due to fuels, plastic components and rubbers. In responding to these situations, fire-fighting foam is blanketed on the equipment to help cool the fire, coat the fuel and eliminate oxygen, resulting in suppression of the fire. All of the district’s apparatus are equipped with foam to quickly extinguish fires.
