CIHS to show film on history of mullet
The Captiva Island Historical Society is taking reservations for its next free, outdoor movie night.
The CIHS will host “Open-Air Cinema 2” on March 8 at 7 p.m. in the parking lot of the McCarthy’s Marina, with a rain date scheduled for March 15. The film is “Mullet: A Tale of Two Fish,” a WGCU-produced 57-minute documentary that captures the history of the state’s most under-appreciated fish.
Learn about the importance of mullet as a food source for the Native Americans, Spanish explorers and Florida pioneers, plus the rise and fall of the commercial mullet fishing industry in the 20th century.
“It’s kind of our version of a drive-in movie night,” Board President Tom Libonate reported leading up to “Open-Air Cinema 1” held on Feb. 8, which was a success. “It’s a cart-in, walk-in movie night.”
Attendees can drive to the event as there will be parking for vehicles.
At the venue, there will be an area sectioned off for seating and people can bring chairs. Those who arrive by golf carts can choose to sit in them if they prefer as there will be an area designated for carts.
In adherence with CDC protocols, physical distancing at the event will be maintained.
“Everything we are doing this year is out of caution. Our events are outdoors and they present the opportunity for people to be socially distanced,” Libonate previously said, adding that face coverings are recommended when entering and exiting the venue.
Those interested in attending can register online or by phone.
“To make sure that we do have proper distancing we have a limited number of spaces, so we do ask folks to reserve a place,” he said. “That will give us an indication of how many folks to expect.”
The CIHS continues to thank its participating sponsors, including Captiva Cruises and McCarthy’s Marina as its event sponsor and The Sanibel Captiva Trust Company as its season presenting sponsor.
