The Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club’s 2021 Virtual Sanibel Shell Show will premiere on March 5-6 from noon to 3 p.m. on the club’s YouTube channel. The free show will feature more than 35 original video vignettes, a photo contest and door prizes and offer something to entertain and educate every interest.

One video will guide viewers “Behind the Tanks” at the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum’s aquarium gallery. Aquarists Rebecca Mensch and Carly Hulse will host a special tour on how they keep the animals healthy and happy. Watch a menu prepared to match the diet of the mollusks, fish and coral. Explore the equipment and testing necessary to ensure that the water temperature and chemical balance is right. See the veterinarian do a monthly check on the animals, and learn which ones seldom reproduce and which ones reproduce repeatedly and rapidly in captivity. Check out the toys provided to the octopuses for enrichment. Mensch and Hulse will also share what they most love about the work.

In another video, Mensch will chronicle her work with live junonias, with footage that shows for the first time how they subdue their prey. Other videos will feature live mollusks, like horse conchs, lightning whelks and other creatures, such as the Gulf fireworm. “After the Storm” will highlight the shells and animals often thrown up on local beaches after a perfect northwest wind, while “Mollusks 101” will explore reasons for shell shapes and colors, survival strategies, and sexual orientations.

“There is something for everyone in the Virtual Shell Show,” event chair Clair Beckmann said. “In addition to these educational videos about mollusks, there are do-it-yourself projects, 101 ideas for displaying your shells, and tours of shell artists’ studios. There is a virtual fossil field trip and updates on water quality research.”

The “101 Ways to Display Shells” video is filled with clever ideas, from placing shells within shells and displaying shells on corals and around door jambs, to organizing shells by type and color. Artistic projects featured will include a how-to project using a printer’s tray to display shells, the creation of a shell picture frame by the Shell Crafters, DIY “Beach Bling” hand sanitizer, shell magnet and more.

“Viewers will also see the over 300 submissions made to the photo contest and vote for the People’s Choice award,” she said. “Door prizes will be awarded every half hour to a selected viewer who comments on our YouTube channel.”

The club thanked its sponsors, including presenting sponsor Beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel.
