The Progressive Club of the Islands will hold its virtual monthly meeting on Feb. 18 at 4 p.m.

The guest speaker will be U.S. Rep. Van Demings, D-Orlando, who serves the 10th Congressional District. She will speak on the current challenges in Florida and America and the necessary actions that need to be undertaken.

Born in Jacksonville, Demings worked as a social worker, then joined the Orlando Police Department. Over a 27-year career, she served in many roles, including commander of the Airport Division during Sept. 11, commander of special operations, member of the Crisis Negotiation Team, commander of the Critical Incident Stress Management Team and executive vice president of the International Association of Airport and Seaport Police.

In 2007, Demings was selected to serve as chief for the Orlando police — the first woman to hold the position. Her tenure was marked by a 40 percent reduction in violent crime, including robberies and murders. Demings also served as co-chair of the Florida Gang Intervention Regional Task Force and member of the Florida Police Chiefs Legislative Team. She founded Operation Positive Direction, a mentoring program designed to strengthen the relationship between local law enforcement and youth.

Elected to Congress in 2016, Demings’ assignments include the: Committee on Homeland Security; House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (subcommittee Defense Intelligence and Warfighter Support and Intelligence Modernization and Readiness); and House Judiciary Committee. She is a member of the Congressional Black Caucus, Women’s Caucus and New Democrat Coalition. In addition, Demings is a vice chair of the Gun Violence Prevention Task, recruitment chair for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and member of the Election Security Task Force.

In 2018, she was appointed by the Speaker of the House to serve as an impeachment manager, one of only three women to serve in the position. Demings remains active in her community through organizations like St. Mark A.M.E. Church, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Orlando chapter of The Links, NAACP and the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives.

It is an interactive meeting with time provided for questions. To attend the meeting, email pcisancap@gmail.com to receive the Zoom link or watch live at www.facebook.com/pcisancap.
