Arbor Day Youth Contest winners announced

In conjunction with the city’s Vegetation Committee, the Sanibel Recreation Department hosted a youth contest to celebrate Arbor Day.

The awareness and education activities included an essay or poem contest for grades 4-8. The topic was Arbor Day with a poem that was a minimum of three lines or an essay on “Why are trees so important?” Youth in grades K-3 could submit a drawing inspired by Arbor Day. The winners included:

– Kindergarten, coloring contest winner: Cora Gaffney

– First grade, coloring contest winner: Jane Rosenfeld

– Second grade, coloring contest winner: Elise Martinez

– Third grade, coloring contest winner: Carson Young

– Fourth grade, essay contest winner: Reagan Gould

– Fourth grade, essay contest winner: Mariia Zacharievich

– Fifth grade, essay contest winner: Anna Kolobova

– Sixth grade, poem contest winner: Gia Lackenby

– Seventh grade, essay contest winner: Anna Anderson-Kilgore

– Eighth grade, poem contest winner: Faith Mitchell

The winners received ribbons, along with watering cans and plants.

The contest was sponsored by R.S. Walsh Landscaping.
