Stop using the word ‘fight’

By Staff | Jan 20, 2021

To the editor:

I keep hearing people use the word “fight.” “We will fight to protect our beliefs. “We will fight to protect the environment.” “We will fight to do … this or that.” Could we please stop using the word “fight” and use the word “work”?

“Work” implies a long-term commitment and is actually harder to do than “fight,” which implies a short term engagement. “Work” is peaceful, whereas “fight” implies combat and violence. “Fight” implies that anyone disagreeing with you is an enemy and not another concerned citizen.

Please, let us all stop fighting and get to work. I will fight for people to start using the word “work.”
