Reported number of COVID-19 cases increase on islands

UPDATE: As of yesterday’s update, Sanibel’s total number of recorded cases has increased to 185; Captiva remains at seven.

Lee County has recorded 48,145 total cases of COVID-19 — 46,646 residents and 1,499 non-residents — including 189 between Sanibel and Captiva, according to the Florida Department of Health.

As of the Jan. 17 update, the DOH reported that it has recorded a total of 1,571,279 cases in Florida. The figure consists of 1,542,567 residents who tested positive, along with 28,712 non-residents.

There have been 24,137 deaths among Florida residents — 1.6 percent of the total cases.

There have been 728 deaths among residents in Lee — 1.6 percent of the total cases.
