The United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance or VITA program offers tax assistance for qualified taxpayers. Qualifying households may have their returns completed and filed for them at no cost.

Beginning Feb. 5, VITA will offer a socially distant tax preparation service at the F.I.S.H. of Sanibel-Captiva Walk-In Center from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 2430 Periwinkle Way, Suite B, Sanibel. Participants will drop off their documentation at the side door of the office and pick up approximately one week later. Appointments are required and fill up quickly. Additional appointment dates are Feb. 12, Feb. 19, Feb. 26, March 12, March 26 and April 9.

Households earning $66,000 or less and who need assistance in preparing their tax returns qualify for the VITA Program. VITA preparers are IRS-certified trained volunteers who can inform taxpayers about special tax credits that may be applicable.

Those wishing to have their tax return completed must bring the following:

– Photo identification

– Social security cards for you, your spouse and your dependents

– All wage and tax statements, including Forms W-2, W-2G, 1099-R and SSA-1099

– Interest and dividend statements

– Last year’s tax return

– Any other tax documents you received
