Shell Club awards grant for red tide study
The Sanibel-Captiva Shell Club’s board recently approved a grant request in the amount of $2,000 for Florida Gulf Coast University Assistant Professor Puspa Adhikari. He is conducting research on the potential link between coastal nutrients and red tide blooms, which the club funded with a grant in 2019. This year Puspa made another grant request to continue the project but by revisiting the sampling sites during the winter months to determine if there is a seasonal variation in the nutrient dynamics in Southwest Florida. The club awards grants from the proceeds of its annual Shell Show. They are given toward education and research in the fields of conchology and malacology, as well as for conservation and water quality projects, primarily in the region.
