Leslie R. Forney Jr, 91, died peacefully on December 14, 2020 at the Fernandina Beach Nursing Home.
Les Forney was the son of a career army officer and was born in Tientsin, China while his father was on active duty there. He graduated from the Ohio State University, where he served as President of the Student Senate. Les had a distinguished 30-year army career, retiring at the rank of Brigadier General. As a field artillery officer, Les served one combat tour in Korea and two in Vietnam, and he was a battalion commander in the 101st Airborne Division. During his military service, he earned many decorations including The Distinguished Service Medal, a Bronze Star Medal with combat V, and two purple hearts.
Following his army service Les worked as a city manager in Port Orange, FL and Miami Shores, FL, and as a legal administrator before retiring to Sanibel, FL in 2003.
Les married Diane Price in 1958. Shortly thereafter they moved to Taiwan where both of their sons were born, followed by tours all around the United States and a second tour in Taiwan. At the end of Les’ Army career, he and Diane settled in Miami Shores, FL.
After years of annual vacations to Sanibel, they moved to the island in 2003. Les loved living on Sanibel. He was an avid fisherman and beach comber and spent many happy days on the Sanibel beaches with his children and grandchildren. He was active in the Hammerheads and in the Lions Club. He moved to Fernandina Beach, FL in 2017 to be near family due to declining health.
Les is survived by his sons Dan and John, daughters-in-law Deborah and Eva-Marie, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Les will be laid to rest at the Sarasota Veterans Cemetery at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Salvation Army.
