Poetic License: ‘Stopping by the Dunes on a Rainy Evening’

PHOTO PROVIDED
(Poem left by the Sanibel Tooth Fairy)
Whose tooth this was I think I know,
His house is in the Dunes, although
He may not mind my stopping here
Before his new tooth starts to grow.

PHOTO PROVIDED Joe Pacheco
My flying horse must think it queer
I found a front tooth lying near
The golf course and the hazard lake
On July second of this year,
He gives his flapping wings a shake —
I tell him there is no mistake,
The shepherd boy of Palestine
Has left this toothy Valentine.
I’d like to help him count his sheep,
But I have promises to keep
To other kids while they’re asleep,
To miles of kids while they’re asleep.
