The day after Thanksgiving marks a Sanibel-Captiva Lions Club holiday tradition — its annual Christmas Tree Fundraiser kicks off. The area next to Island Cinema at the Bailey’s Shopping Center will turn into a wonderland of 150 premium fraser firs, freshly cut and shipped from Michigan.

From now through Dec. 23, or until the supply runs out, the trees are available for purchase Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Grown in Michigan, they are between 5 feet and 10 feet tall.

“We are fortunate to have a wonderful source of full, healthy and long lasting premium trees. Last year our trees arrived with snow still on them,” event organizer Rick Wagner said. “Our customers return year after year due to the quality of our trees.”

Island delivery and setup are available.

Because of COVID-19, there are a couple of changes this year. The club will have hand sanitizer available, social distancing will be practiced, and all Lions volunteers will be wearing masks. For the safety of all involved, the club is requesting that customers also wear a mask when they come by.

This year, the club has arranged for online ordering and payment at www.SanCapLions.org. A pickup time can be arranged when an order is placed. Lions volunteers will place the tree on your vehicle.

The Sanibel-Captiva Lions Club began selling fresh trees more than 40 years ago. The annual Christmas Tree Fundraiser has since grown to become one of its largest fundraising events.

“The entire club pitches in, from set up to selling, which ensures 100 percent of our earnings goes directly to the charitable work of the Lions Club,” President Steve Schulz said.

The club thanked Richard Johnson and Bailey’s General Store for providing space for the sale and continuing to support of the Lions. It also thanked the SCCF Hammerheads for assisting with the site setup and the members of the Sanibel Fire and Rescue Department who helped to unload the trees.
