America’s Boating Club to offer boating course

By AMERICA'S BOATING CLUB - | Nov 18, 2020

America’s Boating Club of Sanibel-Captiva will present the America’s Boating Course in two sessions — Dec. 3 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. and Dec. 12 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — at the Sanibel Public Library.

The course covers basic boat operation and safety with an emphasis on boating the local waters around Sanibel and Captiva. Among the topics reviewed are required safety equipment, boat handling, docking and anchoring, navigation, right of way rules, VHF radio operation, and handling emergency situations at sea. Students are introduced to boating the local waters by studying navigation charts for Pine Island Sound, San Carlos Bay and the Caloosahatchee River. Important destinations, channels and waterways are reviewed and advice for confidently boating in local waters is discussed.

The course is designed for those new to boating or the area, as well as experienced boaters who would like to strengthen their skills. Senior, highly experienced instructors present the course material using lectures, demonstrations and discussions. Completion of the course and passing a simple exam qualifies students to receive a Boating Safety Education ID card from the state. Included with the course is a sunset cruise in February on the San Carlos Bay, during which students experience navigation during daylight hours and after dark.

The cost of the course, text and cruise is $70.

Preregistration required by Nov. 30.

Class size is limited to 20 students and early registration is advised.

To register, visit www.sancapboating.club, click on the “Education” tab at the top of the page and complete the registration form for the “America’s Boating Course” on Dec. 3 and 12.

The course will be offered again on Jan. 14 and 23.
