A moment with ‘Ding’

By REFUGE / DDWS - | Nov 17, 2020

In 1962, at the age of 86, Jay Norwood “Ding” Darling penned this farewell cartoon that appeared on the front page of the Feb. 13 edition of the Des Moines Register, in the very place his cartoons had appeared daily for 50 years. Titled “‘Bye now — it’s been wonderful knowing you,” it depicts him exiting his studio in Iowa. The J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge, which Darling created as the Sanibel National Wildlife Refuge in 1945, displays an interactive exhibit of his studio. This year, the refuge celebrates its 75th anniversary on Dec. 1. One goal of the celebration has been to raise awareness of Darling, considered a legend in the annals of conservation history.
