Biden is the better candidate

By Staff | Oct 6, 2020

To the editor:

The debacle of the first presidential debate is over. Shortly after it ended, CNN’s Jake Tapper described it as “a hot mess, inside a dumpster fire, inside a train wreck … It wasn’t even a debate. It was a disgrace.”

I hoped to see a different side of President Donald Trump, to gain insight as to why anyone could possibly want four more years of his chaos and lies. But he feels most comfortable on Twitter, not acting in a dignified manner as our president should. He spent most of the 90 minutes refusing to follow debate rules both he and his campaign had agreed to. He bullied, interrupted, heckled and talked over the moderator and former Vice President Joe Biden, plus made frequent unfounded misrepresentations. Trump’s low point was refusing to condemn white supremacists and armed militia members like the Proud Boys.

Although Biden lost his composure several times, and called Trump a racist, a clown and “the worst president America has ever had,” he frequently looked directly into the camera to the public audience and appealed to moderates. Biden showed a discipline that is lacking in Trump.

The COVID-19 pandemic has raged in our country and the world for almost eight months. We still lack a coordinated federal plan and are entering the fall with upticks in many states. Two of the most effective ways to control virus outbreaks are following social distance guidelines and wearing face masks in public.

For last night’s debate, Case Western and the Cleveland Clinic required that all in attendance be tested in advance, follow social distancing guidelines and wear face masks throughout the debate (except the moderator and the debaters). The First Lady, Trump’s four adult children, as well as many from his administration, and supporters wore face masks as they entered the debate room. But, after they sat down they all removed their masks. Even after a Cleveland Clinic doctor approached the adult Trump children in the front row and asked them to wear their masks, they refused. All Biden’s family members and supporters wore face masks, per the rules.

The debate did a huge disservice to American voters, who are searching for reasons to vote for one candidate or the other. My mail-in ballot arrived today. I don’t need two more chaotic debate performances by Trump in October to know that Biden is the better candidate to bring our country back together, unite us as a people and lead us for the next four years.
