City obtains additional waste bags for distribution

By CITY OF SANIBEL - | Oct 1, 2020

CITY OF SANIBEL Sanibel Community Services Director Keith Williams with the biodegradable yard waste bags that the city is currently distributing as long as supplies last.

In response to high demand, the city of Sanibel has obtained an additional 3,200 complementary biodegradable horticulture waste bags for distribution as the deadline for the elimination of plastic bags from Sanibel’s yard waste approaches.

Today, Oct. 1, is the deadline for the elimination of polyethylene-based plastic bags.

While supplies last, homeowners may pick-up their complementary bags Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the front door of the Sanibel Public Works offices, at 750 Dunlop Road, Sanibel.

Polyethylene-based bags contaminate the mulch and compost products generated at the county’s horticulture processing site. The bags being distributing have been provided by Lee County.

Yard and horticulture waste may continue to be properly bundled, containerized in refuse containers or disposed of in biodegradable paper lawn and leaf bags.
