Captiva Memorial Library Virtual Programs

The Lee County Library System, which includes the Captiva Memorial Library — currently closed to visitors in light of COVID-19 — is offering the following free virtual programming for all ages:

Adult programs

• Sept. 21: Small Business Series: Understanding Financial Statements at 2 p.m.

Get a hands-on understanding of how financial statements work and learn how to use financial tools to help manage a business. Stay on top of expenses and income and walk away with practical tools to financially manage your company. During the virtual, workshop attendees will learn the basics about profit and loss, balance sheets, forecasting, and cash flows. Additionally, participants will learn about the free library resources available to business owners. Advance registration required.

• Sept. 25: Author Series with Mary Alice Monroe

Author presentation featuring Mary Alice Monroe talking about her new book, “On Ocean Boulevard.” Monroe is a New York Times best-selling author of over 20 novels and three children’s books. She writes richly textured stories that delve into the complexities of interpersonal relationships and the parallels between the land and life. The presentation is part of an author series provided by the Florida Library Association, featuring award-winning and best-selling authors of various genres to inform, educate and entertain. Authors will spend time chatting about various topics, including: how they became a writer, their writing process, how libraries have impacted their career and audience Q&A.

• Sept. 30: Medicare Open Enrollment Period at 10 a.m.

Join SHINE in its virtual classroom to learn about Medicare options, how to save on Part D costs and prepare for the Open Enrollment Period. The presentation is offered in conjunction with the Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving seniors and adults with disabilities. Advance registration required.

• Sept. 30: Murder at the Library Book Club Author Presentation at 7 p.m.

In partnership with Sourcebooks, Baker & Taylor will host an exclusive live virtual book club event featuring author Jane Stanton Hitchcock, discussing her latest book “Bluff.” “Bluff” is this month’s “Murder at the Library” book club selection and is instantly available for free through Hoopla as both an ebook and audiobook. Advance registration required.


• Sept. 29: Live Teen Author Presentation at 3 p.m.

In partnership with Sourcebooks, Baker & Taylor will host an exclusive live virtual book club event for teens featuring best-selling author Marieke Nijkamp, discussing her latest book “This is Where it Ends.” This month’s virtual teen book club novel takes readers through the harrowing story of a high school shooting. The title is available in multiple formats and can be instantly streamed or downloaded through Hoopla. Advance registration required.

• Sept. 23: Stay At Home Storytime at 10 a.m.

In October, the Lee County Library System will host Fandom Fest for All Ages. Take part in a month-long virtual celebration of fandoms and geek culture. Celebrate a new fandom theme each week. Special activities include: reading challenges, trivia, a costume contest, art exhibit, special storytimes, cosplay presentations, virtual escape rooms, crafts and prizes.
