Captiva Island Fire Control District tentatively approves same millage rate
email@example.comThe Captiva Island Fire Control District tentatively approved the same millage rate Thursday night as the previous year.
The commissioners approved the 2020-2021 operating millage rate of 1.7540 mills, which is .78 percent above the rolled-back rate of 1.7405 mills. The tentative budget, which is less than a 1 percent increase, is $3,959,246.
“Our property values hardly changed,” Fire Chief Jeff Pawul said of the .78 percent budget increase.
He said they are able to accomplish some good things next year without raising the millage rate.
The Captiva Island Fire Control District will undergo some capital improvements to upgrade radio technology, advancements for their 800 radios.
“We have a big chunk of equipment that we have to replace due to that,” Pawul said. “Ninety percent of our handheld radios need to be upgraded to the new compliance. All but one of our mobile radios in our apparatus has to be replaced. That is a big capital expenditure for next year.”
The final budget hearing will be held at 5:01 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24.
