Safe at Sea: Fish Rules is helpful app when fishing

By PAT SCHMIDT - | Sep 9, 2020

During a successful fishing trip, you can now determine if your catch is “legal.” Thanks to the Fish Rules App, every angler can determine not only the identify of their catch, but whether the fish needs to return to the sea or is saved for dinner.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission recently partnered with Fish Rules App to make it easier for anglers to keep up with the current regulations, which seem to be ever-changing. The app is focused on salt-water fishing; however, a freshwater version was expected to be available in these later months of summer.

According to Jessica McCawley, director of the Division of Marine Fisheries Management, “FWC staff and law enforcement have been using this tool for years now due to its excellence in keeping Florida anglers up to date on the latest saltwater fishing regulations.”

McCawley added, “We are thrilled to be able to now support and promote this amazing app to Florida saltwater anglers and expand it to our freshwater anglers, too.”

Jon Fury, FWC director for the Division of Freshwater Fisheries Management, said that the partnership with the app will strengthen the communication of regulations with fishermen/women.

“We look forward to sharing the new version of Fish Rules App with our 1.4 million anglers and encourage them to use the app whenever they are fishing one of Florida’s extraordinary waterbodies,” he said.

By enabling location services of Fish Rules, anglers can get the latest regulation for the specific area where he or she is fishing at any given moment. The app is partnering with the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council and the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council that manage fisheries of Florida in federal waters.

The app is so user friendly. If you are not sure what type of fish you’ve reeled in, the app will help identify the species. You simply take a picture and swipe left or right to see photos and tips on how to identify it. Fish Rules also encourages anglers to share photos of their catch. How great!

A quick download from the app store on your phone will provide you with your Fish Rules app. Then the app, when downloaded and opened, is able to coordinate both your GPS position and your calendar to laser in on your fishing experience. So, the information you receive is specific to your fishing hotspot — in real time.
