Rotary Happenings: Island Rotarians hear from Story2Share host
In a world full of sad and scary news seen on a daily basis, it was a breath of fresh air to hear from this week’s guest speaker at the Sanibel-Captiva Rotary Club meeting — Sean Martinelli, host of NBC2’s Story2Share. He grew up wanting to be a game show host, and while that dream hasn’t happened yet, Martinelli has landed a pretty sweet gig. He joined the NBC2 team in 2018 as a special projects feature reporter, highlighting ordinary people doing extraordinary things.
Martinelli is a proud graduate of Syracuse University and worked his first job in Utica, New York, doing the all-too-normal murder and fire stories. However, he wasn’t fulfilled and thought there must be more. So Martinelli went back to Syracuse and worked on the weekends doing feature stories, hoping that if he did the features really well, that they would take off. And that is exactly what happened.
Two years later, Martinelli received a call from a Fort Myers news director and was offered a job as a full-time feature director. His stories are about 2 minutes long and share news of good things. They showcase wonderful things being done throughout the area by normal people, things that we sometimes forget are happening. In a time of anxiety and stress on a daily basis, Martinelli’s feature stories are something to be cherished. His hope to that people will “think higher and feel deeper.”
Martinelli was awarded the “Best Newcomer” award in 2018 by the Syracuse Press Club, as well as an Emmy nomination in video journalism.
