Green nest identified on west Sanibel

By Staff | Aug 13, 2020

On Aug. 10, the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation reported that volunteers documented the first green sea turtle nest on west Sanibel, bringing the total green count up to five nests for the season. SCCF supporter Linda Linsmayer reported the nest, then volunteers France Paulsen and Irene Nolan successfully found the egg chamber, which can be hard in green nests. They screened, staked and documented it. The nesting season for green sea turtles runs from June to September. Loggerhead sea turtles, which started in April, are about done nesting, with a total of 265 nests on Captiva, 502 on west Sanibel and 144 on east Sanibel as of Aug. 10. Last year, the islands had a total of 32 green nests, which was close to the record of 34 in 2017.
