2021 Sanibel-Captiva Nature Calendar printing

By Staff | Jun 4, 2020

The 33rd edition of The Sanibel-Captiva Nature Calendar is available for sale.

The cover of the 2021 calendar features a photograph of a snowy plover chick sheltering in a pen shell by Theresa Baldwin. The rear cover shows a sunset photographed from the east end by Cliff Beittel.

It shows four of the most observed shorebirds – sanderlings, a snowy plover, black-bellied plover and marbled godwit. Wading birds are roseate spoonbills, a blue heron and a green heron nesting with two chicks. Other months show bottlenose dolphins in the Pine Island Sound, a pileated woodpecker near the Sanibel Lighthouse, and northern parula at the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge. There is also a gray angelfish photographed on a reef off Captiva and a raccoon at the refuge.

Photographers featured Cheryl Arena, Baldwin, Marianne Bargiotti, Beittel, Sara Lopez and Dick Fortune, Lorraine Sommer, and Don Thompson. Writers and residents Betty Anholt and Charles LeBuff and Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation Shorebird Program Coordinator Audrey Albrecht have written the monthly photo narratives.

First published in 1988, the calendar is sold only in Southwest Florida. Each photo contains subject information such as: description, nesting, breeding and feeding habits, range, habitat, status, and health.

Each fall a portion of the publisher’s proceeds are donated to a regional conservation organization. Last fall, a donation of $600 each was made to The Sanibel-Captiva Audubon Society. To date, the publisher has donated about $24,889 to conservation organizations in Southwest Florida.

Again this year, the calendar will be available, upon request, with a shipping envelope made from trash. Make-ready sheets were saved from the press set-up and used to create custom-fit mailing envelopes.

The calendar retails for $14.95 and is available in fine book stores and gift shops.

For mail orders, send $14.95 plus $2 for shipping and handling to: Sanibel-Captiva Nature Calendar, P.O. Box 356, Sanibel, FL 33957. For a Blind Pass Tide edition, send $17.95 plus the $2 for S&H.
