During a recent monitoring survey, Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation Shorebird Biologist Audrey Albrecht and Marine Science Educator Kealy McNeal reported a banded brown pelican with a fully brown head. Bradley Wilkinson, a doctorate candidate from Clemson University, responded on May 26 to let staffers know that the pelican is named SML and it is a 1-year-old from one of the largest and oldest pelican colonies in the Atlantic. Last year, the colony had about 3,500 nesting pairs. It is located at the mouth of the North Edisto River, just south of Charleston in South Carolina.
