Progressive Club to hold virtual meeting
The Progressive Club of the Islands will hold its monthly meeting online on May 21 at 4 p.m.; to receive the Zoom link email firstname.lastname@example.org or watch live at www.facebook.com/pcisancap.
The guest speaker is Dr. Howard Simon, who recently retired as the longest serving ACLU executive director in both Michigan and Florida. He will discuss current voting issues and threats to suppress the vote, including:
– Who is trying to dilute the power of your vote?
– Why are they trying to erect barriers to voting?
– What can we do to encourage more Floridians to vote this fall?
– How can you ensure your vote will count in the August’s primary and the Nov. 3 general election?
A major focus of his talk will discuss the results of the federal trial challenging the governor and the Legislature’s attempt thru SB7066 to minimize the impact of the November 2018 transformative constitutional change restoring the voting rights for more than a million former felons in Florida, and how the outcome could impact the November election.
Graduating from the City College of New York, Simon earned a doctorate in legal and political philosophy from the University of Minnesota, after which he taught at the University of Minnesota and DePauw University for 22 years. He later led the Florida ACLU through numerous high-profile controversies, including school vouchers, abortion rights and the Terri Schiavo case. Simon and his wife moved to Sanibel in 2019 when he retired.
