Two killed in Wednesday morning accident on Burnt Store Road
A three-vehicle accident Wednesday morning on Burnt Store Road in Cape Coral left two people dead. Killed in the accident were Joseph E. Voll and Sue Ellen Voll, both of Punta Gorda.
According to the Cape Coral Police Department, the accident occurred at 8:41 a.m. when a white 2001 Mack dump truck carrying loose rocks and dirt traveling north on Burnt Store Road attempted to avoid the rear of an unidentified dump truck that was stopped and waiting to make a left-hand turn on Caloosa Parkway. In doing so, police said, the Mack dump truck, driven by Christopher A. Abdill of Fort Myers, struck the stopped dump truck and then steered left into the southbound lanes of Burnt Store Road where it hit a red 2018 Mazda CX5 SUV, driven by Joseph E. Voll with Sue Ellen Voll as his passenger.
Police reported the left bumper of Mack truck struck the left portion of the Mazda, causing a “deep intrusion.” After the collision, the truck travelled approximately 70 feet before coming to a final rest. The impact caused the Mazda to rotate perpendicular to the roadway before it came to a final rest.
The Volls both died at the scene, police said, and Abdill was uninjured.
Burnt Store Road was closed for 7 hours due to the crash, according to police, who indicated the crash was not alcohol or drug related.
The accident investigation is continuing and investigators are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident to contact the CCPD at 239-574-3223. You can also submit an anonymous tip at www.capecops.com/tipsTips — Cape Coral Police Department.
