With COVID-19 shuttering businesses and keeping shoppers at home, island-based Floral Artistry and East Fork Creek Gardens – an aquaponic lettuce farm – have had to re-think their daily operations.

“We saw an 85 percent reduction in demand for our lettuce just like that,” Frans Kox, fianc and business partner of floral designer-turned-owner Jana Telecka, said. “We built this business to serve chefs, but the chefs don’t have anyone to serve right now. We had to change our focus to the consumer, directly.”

East Fork Creek has partnered with other food providers in the area to offer pick-up and delivery options for its lettuce, honey and other produce, as well as locally sourced eggs, chickens, bread and more. Their farm market is open to the public on Thursdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“We are all feeling it,” Kox said. “We have fresh healthy food available – we just need to get it to the residents of Southwest Florida.”

On April 1, Floral Artistry temporarily relocated all operations to its design studio at East Fork Creek. The shop is still taking orders for delivery on Sanibel and Captiva but has expanded to Fort Myers.

“We have so many loyal customers on Sanibel and Captiva that kept coming in to the shop or calling us for deliveries,” Telecka said. “It was so wonderful to have their support that we were hesitant to close our doors. In the end, we had to take into consideration the health of our customers and our employees.”

Now, customers can order fresh food and flowers together.

“We have to adapt to survive – all of us,” she said.

Customers are encouraged to order early for Easter instead of waiting until the last minute.

“We have these beautiful hand-painted eggs from Austria that are wildly popular in Europe,” Telecka said. “We are hoping they bring a little Easter cheer to our friends here in the U.S.”
