A moment with ‘Ding’

In 1930, disappearing habitat, drought and over-hunting had reduced waterfowl populations to alarming levels. Political cartoonist Jay Norwood “Ding” Darling prophetically proclaimed that the disappearance of any species boded poorly for mankind. “As go ducks, so goes man,” he liked to say. He titled this cartoon, which published Sept. 19, 1930, “What a Few More Seasons Will Do To the Ducks.” His concern for ducks led him to create the Federal Duck Stamp program in 1934. Since that time, the program has raised funds enough to preserve more than 5.7 million acres of wildlife habitat. The J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge pays homage to that legacy with a new, 3-D Federal Duck Stamp mural inside the Visitor & Education Center.
