Library to feature WWII talk, Doris Day program and more

The Sanibel Public Library is offering a variety of upcoming programs and activities.

The library’s Duane Shaffer will present his World War II 1942 program about the Soviet Naval Base at Sevastopol on March 13 at 10 a.m. The Soviet naval base at Sevastopol was a valuable target. Its importance as a potential naval and air base would enable the Axis to conduct far-ranging sea and air operations against Soviet targets and protect the important Romanian oilfields to the southwest.

Demaris Peters Pike will return with her program, “Que Sera, Sera – Remembering Doris Day,” on March 16 at 10 a.m. Demaris will recount Day’s youth in Cincinnati, her start as a big band singer and rise to stardom in movies, including several songs associated with the star such as “It’s Magic,” “My Secret Love” and “Sentimental Journey.”

Bring your own phone, tablet or laptop to the library on March 17 at 10 a.m. for a one-hour session to learn how to use social media, led by Librarian Beth Jarrell. Class will includes do’s and don’ts of Facebook and Instagram settings, and how to keep personal data secure. Also learn how to make phone calls on Facebook messenger, send a private message and post photos.

Licensed insurance professionals from Informed Choice will present a program about Medicare on March 17 at 1 p.m. Whether you are turning 65 or are 65-plus and still working, it will help you make an informed decision about Medicare options. Presenter is not connected with the Federal Medicare program. Food will be provided. To register, call 239-208-7090.

The VITA Program of United Way of Lee, Hendry, Glades and Okeechobee Counties is available to help residents prepare and e-file their tax return if their 2019 household income was $66,000 or less. Visitor library cards are available for a $10 annual fee.

The Sanibel Public Library is open Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the library is closed on Sundays.
