PHOTO PROVIDED The ribbon cutting for the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum's new “Beyond Shells” exhibit drew a big crowd on March 3.

On March 3, the Sanibel and Captiva Islands Chamber of Commerce celebrated the opening of “Beyond Shells: The Mysterious World of Mollusks” exhibit at the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum, at 3075 Sanibel-Captiva Road, Sanibel. Museum Executive Director Dorrie Hipschman welcomed members of the chamber, and Board President Holli Martin and the campaign cabinet chair spoke about the exhibit. “Beyond Shells” is the keystone of a $6 million expansion and renovation that the museum began last year. On the ground floor, it holds 11 aquariums that house live mollusks, from junonia and scallops, to cuttlefish, squid and a giant Pacific octopus. The exhibit officially opened on March 1.
