PHOTO PROVIDED Mary Paige Abbott, a member of the America’s Boating Club of Sanibel-Captiva, is the new chief commander for the international boating organization.

Mary Paige Abbott began her two-year term as the chief commander of America’s Boating Club on Feb. 15 at the organization’s annual meeting. A member of the Sanibel-Captiva chapter since 2000, she rose through the ranks, teaching boating courses and serving on committees. Abbott stepped into the leadership position of commander in 2006-2007, followed by commander of District 22 for the region in 2010-2011. Following five years of national committee work, she joined the national bridge in 2016 as national administrative officer and then national executive officer. The first woman to lead the organization in its 106-year history, Abbott will serve as chief commander through 2022. Both a sailor and a power boater, she has owned and operated a variety of boats over the years. Her love for the water reaches as far back as her grandfather, who was trained as a sea captain from Scotland. For more about the Sanibel-Captiva chapter, visit www.sancapboating.club or 612-987-2125.
