San-Cap Orchid Society to hold monthly meeting
The Sanibel Captiva Orchid Society will meet on March 16 at 1:30 p.m. at St. Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church, at 2304 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel.
Ron McHatton, the American Orchid Society’s chief education and science officer, will present a Webinar based on his monthly “Greenhouse Chats” that he does for the society. Called “Secrets of an Orchid Pro,” it will cover background and basic information similar to a podcast’s form and take questions from the audience.
Orchid enthusiasts are encouraged to come at 1 p.m. for a fundamentals session, when members talk about their techniques for growing orchids. The March topic will be “March Maintenance – Preparing for Summer.” Anyone with questions or an “ill” orchid that needs diagnosis can bring the plants to the meeting during show and tell.
Most meetings will have orchids for sale, as well as an orchid raffle.
Members are invited to participate in a monthly show at each meeting. Ribbons are awarded for the best hybrid and the best species orchids.
In lieu of its April meeting, the Sanibel Captiva Orchid Society will host a field trip by bus on April 21 to orchid grower RF Orchids in Homestead and OFE International, an orchid materials supplier. The visit to RF Orchids will include a tour of the landscaped grounds. Cost is $50 and includes a choice of lunch; checks accepted only. Register at the March meeting or call Josephine Smith at 517-375-6065.
Annual membership is $25 per person or $45 for couples; guests are $5.
