Bidding opens on Sanibel Captiva Art League bags at Bailey’s
The Sanibel Captiva Art League recently kicked off one of its annual fundraisers with the help of Bailey’s General Store on Sanibel, which donates its store bags, storefront and lots of support.
On display at the store are 40 hand-painted, reusable canvas bags that people can bid on in a silent auction to benefit F.I.S.H. of Sanibel-Captiva. The bags will be available to bid on through March 28.
For over 20 years, the SCAL has been painting the bags to raise money for island charities. The artists contribute their time, supplies and talent to create the bags, which feature local scenes and fauna painted in oil, acrylic or watercolor. Some of the bags are adorned with quilting or other textile art.
“I really enjoy the creativity it takes to transform the bags,” SCAL artist Jeannine Desmarais said. “This year we have birds, shells, animals, portraits, beach scenes and more – every year we find new ways of expressing Sanibel and Captiva.”
The bidding starts at $20 per bag.
“It’s easy to bid on the bag you want – just come in the store and they are right up front,” she said. “You take home a unique Bailey’s shopping bag beautifully transformed into artwork and it’s for a terrific local cause.”
Winning bidders can have their bags shipped to them if they are not local.
“We appreciate all the support that we receive from the Bailey’s family and staff for this important F.I.S.H. fundraiser,” Desmarais said.
