Shark caught, released off Sanibel
Eric Bennett, of Waterford, Michigan, was visiting Sanibel for the first time when he witnessed a fisherman catch and release a hammerhead shark on Feb. 17 just west of the Sanibel Fishing Pier. He reported that it took the fisherman nearly two hours to reel in the estimated 9-foot to 11-foot shark as the watching crowd gathered to over 100 people. The fisherman finally landed the hammerhead just as the sun set to applause from those watching, then with awe and appreciation – he thanked it. With both man and fish exhausted, the fisherman hugged the shark and helped it back to the water. Bennett added that it was an amazing drama to witness.
