Final talk in Calusa Blueway Speaker Series announced
Adventurer Victoria Burgess will recount her voyage, “Cuba to Key West on a Standup Paddleboard,” on March 3 at 6:30 p.m. at the Wa-Ke Hatchee Recreation Center, at 16760 Bass Road, Fort Myers.
She set a world record when she paddled from Cuba to Key West on a SUP. The 115-mile crossing took 27 hours and 48 minutes through winds up to 12 mph and waves four feet high. Burgess will discuss preparing for her journey, challenges throughout the paddle and what motivated her to take on the epic adventure.
It is the last presentation in a series of free Calusa Blueway-related programs.
“After hearing Victoria’s interview about the crossing, I knew we had to have her come share her adventure with us,” Calusa Blueway Coordinator Mike Hammond said. “The mental and physical aspects of standup paddling that far in the dark and not to be able to see where the waves are coming from is incredible.”
