Big Sam’s Funky Nation to headline Beer in the Bushes
It is just about time to tip your hat to the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation’s annual Beer in the Bushes – the unofficial end-of-season party for the islands – set for April 11 from 6 to 10 p.m.
This year’s headliner will be Big Sam’s Funky Nation. One of New Orlean’s treasures, the group is known for a boisterous blend of funk, jazz, rock and hip-hop, nothing short of seismic live “experiences” and a lot of Southern charm. It might very well be The Big Easy’s best kept secret.
Big Sam personally draws on over two decades in the game, spanning everything from 300 shows per year during his days in the Dirty Dozen Brass Band and gigs backing up Widespread Panic and the Dave Matthews Band, to recording and touring with Allen Toussaint and Elvis Costello. Additionally, he was sought out for a recurring role on the critically-acclaimed HBO series “Treme.”
Also performing will be Shamarr Allen and the Underdawgs, also bringing on the horns from New Orleans. Hailing from the Lower 9th Ward, Allen has influences in jazz, hip-hop, rock, funk rhythms, blues and country. He is the lead vocalist and trumpeter. In addition to performing with his band, Allen has collaborated with many renowned artists around the world, such as Willie Nelson, Patti LaBelle, Galatic, Harrick Connick Jr. and Lenny Kravitz to name a few.
Along with world-class music, Beer in the Bushes will feature craft beer tastings from Southwest Florida microbreweries and dinner options from a variety of food trucks. Catering by Leslie Adams will coordinate the truck offerings to complement the beer tastings. All tickets include $10 in TruxBux redeemable for dinner choices from any of the trucks.
The event will take place at the SCCF Nature Center, at 3333 Sanibel-Captiva Road, Sanibel.
Attendees are encouraged to wear a fun hat.
Proceeds from Beer in the Bushes will help to support SCCF’s mission of conserving coastal habitats and aquatic resources on Sanibel and Captiva and in the surrounding watershed.
Tickets go on sale on March 1, with limited early bird pricing available.
