Junonia found on Sanibel
Brothers Dillon Raffa, 10, and Jake Raffa, 8, of Commack, New York, found a junonia shell on the afternoon of Feb. 18 in the ocean near the Sandollar Restaurant Kitchen and Bar on Sanibel. According to their father, Johan Botma, they were playing with some new friends they had made on the beach – Luke Meierotto, 10, and Jake Meierotto, 8 – when they found the shell about 15 feet out in the water. Visiting from New York, the family was unsure at first if the boys had found a junonia. Luckily, the Raffas had taken a trip with Capt. Steve Plein of New Wave Eco Charters a few days prior and learned about the rare shell. A quick text to Plein revealed that the boys had indeed found a junonia. The family added that it was super amazing to share the find with everyone on the beach and they love Sanibel.
