“Sorry son, there isn’t any fatted calf. We ate the last old cow last generation,” the old man tells “Next Generation” in this 1936 cartoon by Jay Norwood Darling titled “When prodigal son meets prodigal father.” The Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist rarely sugar-coated the bleak results of human waste and greed in his statements about conservation, a popular topic for him throughout his life. This year, the J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge celebrates Darling, the man and its founder, as the refuge approaches its 75th anniversary.
