Tower Gallery to host first-ever ‘Poetic Reflections’
The Tower Gallery on Sanibel has an evening of art and poetry planned for the community.
The first-ever “Poetic Reflections” will be held on Feb. 13 from 5 to 8 p.m. Free and open to the public, it will showcase at least three artists and three poets working in collaboration in their chosen media.
“We were brainstorming ideas of what events we should have this year,” Shah Hadjebi, a new member of the gallery’s artists cooperative and events committee, said. “And I just threw this idea out that maybe we should do an evening of poetry and arts.”
He explained that he has participated in the annual ArtPoems in Fort Myers, which consists of artists and poets collaborating to inspire one another to create new art and poetry that is performed live.
“It’s something that has really taken a life of its own,” Hadjebi said.
While ArtPoems typically matches together 10 poets and 10 artists to work in collaboration, the gallery’s events committee decided to try a smaller group for the islands to see how it goes. He noted the poets will pick a piece by their assigned artist and create a new poem about it and vice versa.
During the event, all of the artwork will be on display.
“And the poets will go up and perform their poems,” Hadjebi said. “If the artists want to say a few words about their piece, they can do that. They can talk about their inspiration behind the art.”
The participating poets are Marilyn Mecca, Holly Rose and Lorraine Walker Williams.
“They all have amazing backgrounds,” he said.
All members of the gallery’s cooperative, the participating artists are JoAnne Bedient, Hadjebi and Kathryn Seguin. A fourth, Patrick Conelly, may also take part with both his own art and poem.
“JoAnne and I had already done ArtPoems in the past,” Hadjebi said.
A clay artist, Bedient works with contemporary raku-fired clay creations like teapots, pears, vessels and shoes. According to gallery’s Website, she likes to blend realism and fantasy in her inventive designs.
Hadjebi is a watercolor artist whose subjects range from animals, to still life and realism.
A photographer, Seguin focuses on trying to capture images that show the world from her perspective.
In addition to the performances, there will be new artwork from the gallery’s other artists.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to take home a raffle prize.
“Three pieces have been donated from the artists,” he said.
Food and refreshments will be provided.
Residents and visitors are welcome to come out for an evening of artistic entertainment.
“It’s very interesting to see the translation of art into poetry and vice versa. To me, it’s very fascinating how an artist visualizes a poem and how a poet can put a painting into words,” Hadjebi said. “It’s how various artists use their medium to express what they think and feel.”
