New exhibition at center to feature 12 artists

The Captiva Civic Association will hold an opening reception this week for its new monthly exhibit, titled “Artists Invitational,” which is being sponsored by the Sanibel-Captiva Art League.

It will take place on Feb. 13 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Captiva Civic Center.

Open to the public, the reception will feature music, refreshments and light hors d’oeuvres.

Joan Reynolds, event chair and member of the SCAL, explained that the 12 showcased artists have successfully participated in prior shows at the center, winning awards and selling their artwork.

“We picked the names of people who have been showing the last five years,” she said.

They include David Bollinger, Michele Buelow, Marion Hall, David King, Bonnie Langenfeld, Kathryn McMahon, Reynolds, Rita Skoczen, Jim Storer, Kathy Taylor, Stan Timson and Peter Zell.

Reynolds explained that the artists are a mix of SCAL members and non-members, and some are located on the islands while others are local off-islanders. There is also a balance of women and men.

There are about 50 pieces in the exhibit, as each artist could submit four works. The themes and subjects vary, ranging from landscapes, still lifes and nature, to dramatic, realism and contemporary.

“This time it’s kind of the best of the best,” she said, explaining that there is really no theme for the exhibition. “We let the artists go, let them try to show something they do a little differently.”

“We said, ‘Let’s put out something that’s totally different,'” Reynolds added.

All 12 artists have unique styles and use diverse mediums in vibrant colors.

“It will be two-dimensional artwork,” she said. “It will be wall art.”

There will be fabric, pastel, acrylic, oil, watercolor and more.

“It’s all of the above,” Reynolds said of the pieces.

The CCA expressed its excitement for the upcoming exhibit.

“We’re happy that the Sanibel-Captiva Art League has chosen to partner with us and has chosen to exhibit in the Captiva Civic Center,” Molly Barbee, art chairperson for the association, said.

The public is invited to stop by for the reception and meet the artists.

“I think you’re going to see some top art from local artists. The artists who have been chosen have been popular,” Reynolds said. “This time, the artists are having almost their own little individual shows.”

“Artists Invitational” will be on display through March 12.

The gallery is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from noon to 2 p.m.; viewings are also available by appointment. For more information, visit www.ccacaptiva.org or call 239-472-2111.

The pieces are available for sale, with a portion to benefit the CCA.

The Captiva Civic Center is at 11550 Chapin Lane, Captiva.
