SCUCC, Bat Yam to hold annual ‘Pulpit Swap’
The Sanibel Congregational United Church of Christ and Bat Yam Temple of the Islands invites the community to come celebrate their almost three-decade relationship at the annual “Pulpit Swap.”
The Rev. Dr. John Danner, senior pastor of the SCUCC, will preach on Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m. at the Bat Yam Temple’s Shabbat service. His sermon will be entitled “Out of Darkness,” based on Exodus 10:21-29, the Plague of Darkness, the ninth of the 10 plagues. On Feb. 2, the Rabbi Stephen Fuchs will preach at the church’s 9 and 11 a.m. worship services. Fuchs choose Genesis 22:1-13 to base upon his sermon, “The Violent World of the Sports We Love Most.”
From January to March, Bat Yam worships in the sanctuary of the church, then the remainder of the year it worships in Fellowship Hall, where the ark containing the Torah stands prominently in the room. What makes the arrangement unusual is that the congregations share more than space, they have a deep relationship. They join in yearly potlucks and participate together on service projects, such as the monthly paper goods drive to benefit F.I.S.H. of Sanibel-Captiva. Members from both congregations make up the Green Team, which advocates and takes actions regarding care for the environment. Over the years the rabbis and clergy have co-taught on a variety of subjects, led combined groups on trips and shared warm friendships.
All three services will take place at the SCUCC, at 2050 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel.
