Sanibel Carts owner to speak at ABWA meeting
The Sanibel Captiva Charter Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will host its monthly luncheon on Jan. 28 from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Sundial Beach Resort & Spa.
The guest speaker is Laura DeBruce, attorney, entrepreneur, filmmaker and owner of Sanibel Carts. She will discuss “Lessons Learned from Poker: Know When to Hold ‘Em, Fold ‘Em or Go All In,” sharing stories and wisdom gained from her diverse background combining U.S. Constitutional law, the film industry, Eastern Europe and golf carts.
After graduating from the University of Florida and Boston University Law School, DeBruce traveled to then-Czechoslovakia to teach university courses in U.S. Constitutional Law. She became an associate at Baker & McKenzie in Prague and worked into the position of director of legal affairs for CME Media Enterprises, a player in the growth of television stations throughout Eastern Europe.
DeBruce realized her potential as an entrepreneur when she and her husband co-founded GrandView Castle Entertainment, distributing motion pictures throughout Eastern Europe and Russia for clients that included DreamWorks, Paramount and LucasFilm. She went on to produce several documentary films.
Back in Florida, the couple started Sanibel Carts in 2018, renting street-legal, electric golf carts to residents and visitors on Sanibel. DeBruce is also a partner in DeBruce Blackman, providing legal and consulting advice.
DeBruce has owned a home on the islands since 2010 and became a resident in 2015. She is active in the community, on the board of directors for the Zonta Club of Sanibel-Captiva and Community Housing and Resources, and is a member of the ABWA.
“Laura is a renaissance woman,” ABWA chapter President Gloria Garrett said. “We can’t wait to find out how solar-powered golf carts mesh with her exciting international career and constitutional law; this will be a fun discussion.”
The chapter meets on the fourth Tuesday of the month at the Sundial Beach Resort & Spa, at 1451 Middle Gulf Drive, Sanibel. Networking starts at 11:30 a.m., with lunch and a speaker from noon to 1 p.m. The cost for lunch is $25 per person. The meetings are open to the public.
