CCA, F.I.S.H. to host program on Alzheimer’s, related diseases
In partnership with the Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center and Oasis Senior Advisors, F.I.S.H. of Sanibel-Captiva and the Captiva Civic Association will host a presentation, “Understanding Alzheimer’s and Other Dementia-Related Diseases” on Jan. 27 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the CCA.
In addition, virtual dementia tours will be offered between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m.
Mary Freyre, health education specialist with the Alvin A. Dubin Alzheimer’s Resource Center, will lead the presentation. Attendees will learn the definition, characteristics and stages of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases, while understanding the challenging behaviors of those afflicted with the diseases. Emphasis will be placed on caregiver stress and community resources.
Led and sponsored by Cindy Walker, owner and senior living advisor with Oasis Senior Advisors, the eight-minute virtual tour will enable participating to experience the daily routine of a person with a dementia-related disease. Attendees can also sign-up to schedule a memory screening, which will be held at later date.
“Alzheimer’s is a complicated disease. Many times persons use the term Alzheimer’s disease when speaking about any type of memory loss,” F.I.S.H. Program Director Kathy Y. Monroe said. “There will be discussion about all dementia-related diseases, of which Alzheimer’s is just one.”
“This will be an opportunity to gather facts and information about neurocognitive diseases that affects not only patients but also their family and friends,” she added.
