Zonta seeks candidates for Public Affairs award
The Zonta Club of Sanibel-Captiva is seeking candidates for the annual Young Women in Public Affairs (YWPA) award for 2020 and offers a $1,000 scholarship to the successful candidate. The winning application will also be passed forward to compete at Zonta’s regional and district levels for possible additional honors and awards.
As of 2017, the global percentage of women in Legislature had grown from just 11 in 1995 to 23.5 percent. While the growth is impressive, many barriers remain to women’s political participation and gender parity across the globe. To help address this and to emphasize women’s equal participation in decision-making processes, Zonta International established the YWPA award in 1990.
Empowerment is most effective when started as early as possible in a girl’s life. The award recognizes young women, ages 16 to 19 as of April 1, 2019, who demonstrate superior leadership skills and a commitment to public service and civic causes. The award also encourages young women to continue their participation in public and political life as they journey into higher education and work life.
The winner is likely to be a Lee County high school student who demonstrates active commitment to volunteerism, including leadership; experience in local or student government; and/or workplace leadership.
The application can be printed from www.zonta.org. Mail a hard copy to: Zonta Club of Sanibel-Captiva, P.O. Box 1244, Sanibel, FL 33957 no later than Feb. 22.
The Zonta Club of Sanibel-Captiva is a service organization of professional women working together to empower women and girls through service, advocacy and funds, on the islands, in Lee County and around the world through Zonta International.
