Dec. 10-11 marked the finale of the nine-week Safe Boating Course required of all 6th graders at The Sanibel School. The class is taught by members of the America’s Boating Club of Sanibel-Captiva, lead instructor Marti Squitieri and member Pat Schmidt. Over the weeks, the students classroom covered all the topics included on the Florida Certification Exam, ranging from the “Rules of the Road” to PFD requirements and knot-tying. At the conclusion of the course, they took a final exam and were given the option to complete the Florida Certification Exam to receive their Florida Boating ID Card. In addition, Sanibel Fire and Rescue District Division Chief Tim Barrett underscored the importance of safety as he led the students through a filmed land/air rescue the Search and Rescue Team undertook in 2018.
