Sanibel library to offer Santa Simulator, Teen Scene and more

The Sanibel Public Library offers a variety of programs and activities for adults and youth.

Ride a sleigh in a virtual world and drop presents on rooftops in the Santa Simulator on Dec. 13 from 10 a.m. to noon. Open to age 10 and older, registration is required; call to reserve a time slot.

Teen Scene, “Merry Makes,”will be held on Dec. 16 at 6 p.m. For ages 12-18, come hang out, socialize, create and eat. Reservations required by Dec. 14 by calling Deanna Evans at 239-472-2483; those who must cancel a reservation are asked to notify Evans as there is a waiting list.

Learn to grow a beautiful native landscape during the University of Florida’s “Nine Principals of Florida-Friendly Landscaping” program on Dec. 17 at 1 p.m.

The library’s Book Discussion Group is reading “Queen Bee” by Dorothea Benton Frank. The next discussion will be held on Dec. 18 at 10 a.m. No registration is required to participate.

Also, the following weekly programs are available for youth:

– Family Storytime: Wednesdays at 11 a.m. and Thursdays at 11 a.m. with Youth Service Librarian Deanna Evans. For preschoolers and their caregivers, the program helps develop pre-reading skills through songs and stories.

– After-School Crew: Thursdays at 3 p.m. with Youth Service Librarian Deanna Evans. Kindergarten through fifth graders will get to meet some new books and enjoy puzzles, games, crafts and snacks.

There is no registration required nor additional cost to participate.

Stop by the Selfie Station in the library’s main lobby and take with holiday props.

The Shell Islands Garden Club donates its time and talent to add beauty to the library throughout the year. In addition to its monthly floral display at the service desk, members also have decorated a birdhouse-themed Christmas tree with hand-painted ornaments.

More than 40 of the White House Historical Association’s Official Christmas Ornaments are on display in December at the library. The collection is on loan from Don Lambrix.

Library cards are available to residents of Sanibel and Lee County at no charge.

Visitor library cards are available for a $10 annual fee.

The Sanibel Public Library is open Mondays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the library is closed on Sundays.

The library will be closed on Dec. 24-25 for the Christmas holiday and on Jan. 1 for New Year’s Day. In addition, the library will close early on New Year’s Eve – Dec. 31 – at 1 p.m.
