Time is running out to sign up for the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation’s tourney.

The 28th Annual SCCF Tennis Tournament will take place on Dec. 7-8 at the Beachview Tennis Club on Sanibel. Free and open to spectators, it will showcase men’s and women’s doubles in the categories of 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0, with the winners and runner-ups to receive a Luc Century etched wine glass.

Century, the event founder, was inspired to create the fundraiser to show his support of the SCCF’s mission. His wife, Dee Serage-Century, volunteers at the SCCF Landscapes & Garden Center.

“It’s a cause I love and I love tennis, so it was a natural fit,” he said.

Several years ago, he handed over the torch to current event chair, Lisa Newmeyer-Cochrane.

“It’s a fun event,” she said. “The tennis players like to come, they like to help out through the island and SCCF is a perfect one to give back to.”

The entry fee is $75 per player and includes a T-shirt, plus breakfast and lunch for both days.

The deadline to sign up is Dec. 4.

The etched glasses to be awarded are one-of-a-kind, donated by Century.

“We’re so honored that Luc does the trophies for us. They’re beautiful wine glasses,” Newmeyer-Cochrane said. “There’s not that many tournaments that have really nice gift prizes for the players. It’s something they can take home and enjoy.”

Spectators are encouraged to come out for the event.

“Because there’s no cost for spectators, we would love for everyone to be a part of it,” she said.

Event food and refreshments will be provided by Bailey’s General Store, Doc Ford’s Rum Bar & Grille, Malia Island Fusion Cuisine, Lazy Flamingo, Sanibel Deli and Traders. For a donation, spectators can enjoy the offerings from 9 a.m. to dusk on Dec. 7 and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Dec. 8.

In addition, there will be raffle prize giveaways.

“It normally varies around five to 10 items,” Newmeyer-Cochrane said.

“And there’ll be a complimentary photo booth,” she added.

Grampy’s Charities is the presenting sponsor.

The public is invited to sign up and play or come out and watch.

“It’s an enjoyable event for a wonderful cause,” Newmeyer-Cochrane said.
