George Horning Lowden
George Horning Lowden (98) passed away at his home in Fort Myers, FL on October 7, 2019 He had a fabulous life, was greatly loved, and will be missed deeply by all his family and friends.
Born May 27, 1921 in Elizabeth, NJ, Son of Francis Viele Lowden, and Mable Horning Lowden. Brother to Francis Viele Lowden, Jr of Richmond, VA, and Patricia Joan Lowden of NYC.
Educated at the Pingry School, The Lawrenceville School in New Jersey, and Dartmouth College, class of 1943.
Served in WWII as a Naval Aviator, PBY Flying Boats, before assigned to Naval Air Transport Service (NATS). Flew DC-3, DC-4 on Trans-continental, West Coast, and Alaskan/Aleutian Routes.
Worked mainly in the Petroleum Industry (25 years) with Standard Oil of New Jersey, ESSO Research, ENJAY Chemical Co. (now EXXON Chemical Co) and Lubrizol Corporation. Spent a year with Eastern Air Lines out of Newark following WWII. Continued lifelong interest in Flying in Naval Reserve and privately in own planes.
Was a director of the Barton Mines Corp, Mooney Chemical, and Wallover Oil Co.
Married Louise Josephine Littlefield of Philadelphia in 1950.
Lived in Chatham, NJ, Hudson, Ohio, Bloomfield Village, Mich, and Shaker Heights, Ohio. He retired to Sanibel Island in the mid 1980’s and subsequently moved to Fort Myers, FL.
Survived by three children: George Horning Lowden, Jr (6/6/51) ( Jane) Marblehead, Ma, Josephine Sholler Lowden Chapman (11/11/53) (John) Shaker Heights, Ohio, and David Barton Lowden (8/31/61) (Kelly) Fort Myers, FL
8 Grand children: Philip Barton Lowden (Bart) (4/16/86). George Horning Lowden, III (Sandy) (11/9/90) both from Marblehead, Ma.
Margaret Louise Chapman (6/22/85), Philip Lowden Chapman (7/14/88), and George Russel Chapman (2/22/93) all of Shaker Heights, Ohio.
Emery Louise Lowden (9/24/98), Skyler Barton Lowden (9/24/98) and David Barton Lowden, Jr (DB) (1/27/01) all of Fort Myers.
