Yacht club to host speakers for program about red tide
The Captiva Island Yacht Club will present an Environmental Education Program about red tide on Nov. 12 from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. at the clubhouse, 15903 Captiva Drive, Captiva.
The guest speakers will be Dr. Mike Parsons, a professor of marine science at Florida Gulf Coast University, and Dr. Cindy Heil, director of the Mote Marine Laboratory’s Red Tide Institute.
They have conducted decades of research on red tide.
Parsons and Heil will present a history of Florida’s red tide, focusing on the cause of the blooms, what might exacerbate the size and duration of the blooms, and potential tools to control and mitigate the blooms. Learn how nutrient pollution and climate change affect red tide.
In addition, their discussion will include the 2015-2017 red tide bloom and ongoing studies to determine why the bloom was so lengthy and intense.
Parking is very limited and seating is first come; arrive early and consider carpooling.
