CCA, F.I.S.H. partner up to host program on Medicare
The Captiva Civic Association’s first event of the season aims to help residents made an informed decision about their Medicare options with the recent opening of the new enrollment period.
Being held in partnership with F.I.S.H. of Sanibel-Captiva, the presentation “Medicare 101 and Updates” will take place on Oct. 28 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Captiva Civic Association. The event, which also involves the Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida and SHINE – Serving Health Insurance Needs of Elders – will provide information on program coverage, costs and updates.
“The Captiva Civic Association board has long wanted the civic association building to become the community center for Captiva residents,” President Lisa Riordan said. “Several of the programs that F.I.S.H. offers – we thought would be beneficial if we could place them at the CCA building itself.”
She explained that F.I.S.H. had reached out about hosting joint programs.
“We were thrilled,” Riordan said. “We’re really excited about working together with F.I.S.H. and providing the community with information programs and services.”
The CCA and F.I.S.H. plan to hold four this season, including on one diet and nutrition.
“It’s just a way to provide information programs and personal services to Captiva residents, right on Captiva,” she said.
For the Medicare presentation, Pat Archibald of SHINE will provide attendees with the necessary information to help them make informed decisions about their Medicare coverage and costs. They will learn about 2020 Medicare updates and things to consider if they make changes to their coverage.
“She will go through all of the updates and the changes,” Riordan said. “What those are, specifically, can vary from area to area. Changes to drug plans, supplemental plans are geographically based.”
She noted that Archibald is expertly trained and knowledgeable.
“It’s important for people to know what is available to them in Southwest Florida,” Riordan said.
Of the programs offered through F.I.S.H., it is one that ranked high for the CCA board.
“This one we felt was particularly important because Medicare options change every year and many people are confused about what the changes are,” she said, citing updates on medication coverage from year-to-year as one example. “It can be quite helpful to people, to determine if they should stay with the plan they have or make an adjustment.”
There will be an opportunity for a question-and-answer session.
“Pat will try to answer as many questions as possible on a general basis,” Riordan said.
For more personal specific inquiries or assistance, attendees will have the chance to schedule an appointment with a SHINE counselor for a later date following the presentation. The appointments will be set for Nov. 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Sanibel Congregational Church on Sanibel.
“They can set up an appointment with a SHINE counselor,” she said. “A personal confidential appointment with someone who can assist them with making any decisions.”
For the one-on-one assistance, attendees will be asked to bring with them their medical history information so the counselor can provide them with personalized guidance and assistance.
For the presentation, no reservations are required.
“Our doors will be open to anybody who wants to attend,” Riordan said.
The enrollment period for Medicare opened on Oct. 15; it will close at the end of the year.
“This is something that has to be done at this time of the year,” she said. “There’s a timeframe when people have to make these decisions and changes, if they choose to do so.”
Residents are encouraged to attend.
“Join us and get the information that you feel you need to make informed decisions, on not just the programs offered but on the costs,” Riordan said.
She added that the presentation is not just open to those who are Medicare eligible.
“If someone is about to become Medicare eligible, they may want to sit in just to see what the future decisions are that they may have to be making soon,” Riordan said.
